The Department of Environment sponsors best mountain chicken calypso as part of the National Calypso Monarch Competition The Mountain Chicken Project, run by the Department of Environment and Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, is pleased to announce that they will be sponsoring a prize in the 2011 National Calypso Monarch Competition, for the best calypso describing the mountain chickens in crisis. The winning calypso will best describe the cultural significance of the mountain chicken to Montserrat and the fact that it is under threat of extinction by the deadly chytrid fungus, which is affecting amphibians all over the world. Other factors threatening this species that could also be described would be hunting pressure, invasive species and the loss of habitat due to volcanic activity. The song should include how important it is for Montserratians to come together to help support and protect this species. One Thousand Dollars ($1,000) will be awarded to the singer of the best song. Any song depicting the Mountain Chicken, which is entered into the 2011 National Calypso Monarch Competition, will be eligible.
